Five years after Love Alarm, Song Kang and Kim So-hyun are officially reuniting on screen.
MBC confirmed on August 25 that the two actors will lead its upcoming Friday-Saturday drama White Scandal, turning months of casting speculation into one of the year’s most anticipated K-drama reunions.
And this time, their romance comes with a very different setup. No app telling them who likes whom. Instead: a fake relationship, a chaebol succession battle and a scandal buried in their past.
From ‘Love Alarm’ to a much darker romance
Song Kang and Kim So-hyun previously starred together in Netflix’s Love Alarm, where they played Hwang Sun-oh and Kim Jo-jo.
Their complicated relationship became one of the drama’s most divisive elements, particularly because Jo-jo ultimately did not end up with Sun-oh. That history makes the reunion especially entertaining for longtime viewers.
When reports of White Scandal first emerged earlier this year, some fans immediately joked that the new drama could finally “heal” their Love Alarm hearts. One fan discussion summed up the feeling simply: they wanted the pair to do another drama together “and this time with a happy ending.”
Whether White Scandal will actually provide that happy ending remains to be seen. Its premise suggests the road there will be complicated.

Song Kang will play Dan I-hyuk, one of South Korea’s biggest actors and a third-generation chaebol.
But the glamorous life comes with a catch.
Born outside the chaebol family’s traditional line, I-hyuk has spent much of his life performing the version of himself his grandfather expected. In front of the camera, he plays the perfect celebrity. Outside it, he is trapped inside a powerful family and desperately wants to escape its succession battle.
His solution eventually involves Ji Eun-seol. The two agree to start a fake relationship, supposedly to fool the world.
Naturally, things are not that simple.

Kim So-hyun plays Ji Eun-seol, who was once considered a promising child actress before a major incident destroyed her career.
She has never completely abandoned acting, but now works as a manager behind the scenes.
Then she encounters I-hyuk again the man connected to the incident that changed her life. Their contract relationship gradually forces both characters to revisit the wounds and secrets they had tried to bury. MBC describes the series as a “mutual redemption romance,” with each character becoming part of the other’s healing process.
The creative team makes this even more interesting
White Scandal will be directed by Kim Cheol-kyu, whose credits include Flower of Evil and Mother.
The screenplay comes from Kim Ga-eun, who wrote Call It Love.
That combination offers a clue about the tone. Flower of Evil mixed romance with secrets, crime and distrust, while Call It Love built its relationship around emotionally wounded characters slowly becoming important to each other. White Scandal appears to sit somewhere in that territory: romance at the center, but with family power, old scandals and psychological wounds surrounding it.

The possibility of the reunion was first reported in February, when both actors’ agencies said they were reviewing offers for the project. The news immediately revived interest in their Love Alarm chemistry, with the pair trending among international fans and viewers celebrating the possibility of seeing them together again in a more adult story.
Now there is no more “in talks.” They are officially doing it. And perhaps the biggest difference from 2021 is that neither character is entering this relationship innocent.
I-hyuk has spent his life pretending to be what his family wants. Eun-seol has already watched her career collapse. They begin by pretending to be in love. The obvious question is how long they can keep pretending.
MBC says production will begin soon, but an exact premiere date has not yet been officially announced.
