Son Ye-jin has revealed just how happy she was when filming finally ended for Netflix’s historical romance The Scandal.

On September 22, the actress uploaded behind-the-scenes photos taken shortly after she completed the series. Still dressed in an elegant, partially sheer hanbok from the production, Son posed in front of congratulatory decorations prepared by the staff.

One image shows her making a peace sign for the camera. Another captures her breaking into an enormous smile, creating a playful contrast with the controlled and calculating character she portrays on screen.

“Apparently, I was this happy after filming ended,” she wrote, before asking viewers to support The Scandal on Netflix.

Son Ye-jin’s joyful expression is especially striking because Lady Cho spends much of The Scandal carefully controlling what others are permitted to see.

Her most consequential move is proposing a secret romantic wager to Cho Won, played by Ji Chang-wook. Known as Joseon’s most accomplished seducer, Cho Won initially treats the arrangement as another opportunity for pleasure. The situation changes when Hee-yeon, played by Nana, becomes entangled in their game.

Speaking about the project, Son explained that she felt she had reached an age when she could properly express Lady Cho’s complicated emotions. She was also attracted to the contrast between intense human desire and a historical period in which openly expressing that desire was forbidden.

The role brought Son back to the historical genre while presenting her with a woman markedly different from many of her best-known romantic characters.

Korean audiences may also recognize its connection to the acclaimed 2003 film Untold Scandal, which similarly relocated the story’s seductive power games to Joseon society.

The eight-episode Netflix adaptation gives the narrative more time to explore its central relationships. In particular, the series expands the emotional connection between Lady Cho and Hee-yeon rather than treating the younger woman only as the target of a wager.

Director Jung Ji-woo, known for films including Happy End, Eungyo and Tune in for Love, brings his established interest in desire, intimacy and moral discomfort to the project. The central conflict is consequently not limited to who wins the romantic game. It asks what happens when people begin experiencing genuine emotions inside a relationship built on deception.

A Candid Ending to a Carefully Controlled Performance

Actors frequently describe the end of filming as emotionally complicated. Completing a production can bring relief, pride and sadness at the same time, particularly after spending months inside a psychologically demanding character.
