Seo Kang-joon is returning to romantic drama with a character who initially appears to be the ideal long-term boyfriend, but whose real story begins when that familiar image starts to fracture.

KBS 2TV released the first character stills of Seo as Namgoong Ho on Aug. 10, offering a glimpse of his role in the upcoming weekend series A Love Other Than Yours. The images show Ho watering plants at home and moving through office life in a neatly fitted suit, emphasizing the considerate and dependable qualities that have defined his relationship for a decade.

The drama premieres Sept. 12 at 9:20 p.m. KST and pairs Seo with My Dearest actress Ahn Eun-jin. Rather than focusing on the excitement of two strangers falling in love, the series examines what happens after a couple has accumulated years of memories, routines and expectations.

A Relationship That Appeared Certain

Namgoong Ho works as an assistant manager in Hoonmin Confectionery’s TF Snack Team 3. He is sociable, humorous and attentive, with a personality that allows people around him to feel comfortable.

His connection with Lee Mi-do, played by Ahn, began long before romance entered the picture. They started playing together at age seven, grew from childhood friends into lovers and remained together for 10 years. They know each other’s embarrassing memories and everyday habits so thoroughly that marriage seems less like a question than the expected next step.

That certainty becomes the source of the drama’s central conflict.

When unfamiliar emotions enter their lives, the couple must confront whether their shared history is enough to sustain their future. Ho, who has spent years believing his love was unwavering, begins experiencing doubts he has never previously needed to examine.

The story does not immediately frame either character as a villain. Instead, it places them in the uncomfortable space between loyalty, familiarity and emotional change.

Why the Role Fits Seo Kang-joon’s Strengths

Seo has played romantic leads before, but some of his most memorable performances have depended on emotional restraint rather than conventional romantic confidence.

In Are You Human Too?, he portrayed both a human heir and an artificial-intelligence counterpart, differentiating the two through subtle changes in expression and behavior. In When the Weather Is Fine, he played the reserved bookstore owner Im Eun-seob, building intimacy through silence, observation and small gestures.

His later projects expanded that range. The psychological thriller Watcher asked him to portray suspicion and buried trauma, while Grid moved him into science-fiction mystery. Following his military service, he returned to television in Undercover High School, combining action, comedy and emotional drama as an intelligence agent posing as a student.

Namgoong Ho offers a different challenge. The character is not emotionally distant or obviously troubled when the story begins. He is warm, affectionate and accustomed to imagining a shared future. Seo must therefore show doubt developing inside someone who has every reason to believe his relationship is secure.

That gradual shift, rather than the promotional stills alone, could determine whether Ho becomes a defining romantic character in Seo’s career.

The production team described Namgoong Ho as someone many people would want as a partner, while also emphasizing that he faces a deeply realistic dilemma.

According to the producers, Seo settled naturally into the character from the first shoot and captured both Ho’s warmth and the subtle signs of his changing heart. They promoted the role as a potential new signature melodrama performance for the actor, though that assessment remains an expectation from the production rather than a judgment audiences have made.

The stills deliberately emphasize Ho’s “boyfriend” appeal, but the drama’s premise suggests that his kindness will not protect him from difficult choices. Being attentive, loyal and emotionally familiar does not automatically resolve what happens when a relationship changes after 10 years.

That tension separates A Love Other Than Yours from romance stories built primarily around an ideal male lead. Ho may look like the perfect partner, but the series appears more interested in what perfection means when love no longer feels simple.

A Romance Designed for a Global Audience

A Love Other Than Yours is directed by Hwang Seung-gi and Lee Ga-ram, with a screenplay by Yoo Soo-ji. Lee Joo-ahn and Jo Aram also join the central relationship story, playing people whose arrival introduces new emotional possibilities into the lives of the established couple.

KBS has announced that the series will be available internationally through Prime Video alongside its Korean broadcast. The global release gives international viewers another opportunity to see Seo in the kind of emotionally detailed romance closely associated with some of his best-known work.

The drama’s biggest question is not simply whether Namgoong Ho and Lee Mi-do will remain together. It is whether a relationship built over most of their lives can survive once both people begin looking at love, and themselves, differently.
