The global hit Perfect Crown is facing a major piracy issue. Despite its official streaming through Disney+, the drama is being illegally consumed and reviewed by thousands in China.
MBC’s Perfect Crown, the sensation currently captivating audiences worldwide, is suffering from widespread illegal distribution. Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University, a vocal advocate for the protection of Korean cultural content, took to social media on April 23 to expose the severity of the piracy targeting the IU and Byeon Woo-seok-led series.

The scale of the issue is significant. Despite Disney+ not being officially serviced in China, Perfect Crown has already gained a massive “unofficial” presence on the country’s largest review site, Douban. As of April 23, the drama has racked up over 10,000 ratings and 4,000 reviews on the platform.
Professor Seo emphasized that because the drama is not officially available in China, these reviews serve as concrete proof that the content is being consumed via unauthorized, illegal streaming channels.

Professor Seo did not hold back in his criticism, noting that illegal streaming has become a disturbing “daily routine” for some Chinese netizens.
“If you search for Perfect Crown on Baidu, China’s largest portal, you can easily find free, illegal streaming sites,” Seo stated. “It is shocking that there is absolutely no sense of shame regarding these illegal activities.”
He called for immediate intervention, urging Chinese authorities to take responsibility. “Now is the time for the Chinese authorities to take active measures. They must inform their citizens about the illegality of these acts and take steps to ensure this does not happen again.”

Perfect Crown is a unique genre-hybrid that has captivated audiences with its concept of a 21st-century constitutional monarchy. Starring IU as a powerful but “illegitimate” commoner and Byeon Woo-seok as a trapped royal, the drama’s sophisticated aesthetic and compelling narrative have made it a massive commercial success—which makes the theft of its intellectual property even more detrimental to the creators and the platform.
As this drama continues to climb the ratings charts, the push to protect its distribution rights remains a critical issue for the Korean entertainment industry.
